Specific Education, Certification and Skill Requirements (if applicable): BA plus 1 year experience or HS diploma and 2 years of related experience. Position may be upgraded to Social Worker (must have Master's degree plus 2 years of post-master's experience). Requires very strong organizational skills, ability to market program and work collaboratively with other service providers both on and off island. Experience in either public benefits acquisition or re-entry preferable.
Job Description: CUCS operates two Single Stops on Riker’s Island. Our goal is to reduce recidivism rates at Riker’s by assisting low income New Yorkers in taking initial steps towards self sufficiency. We address basic concerns onsite that may otherwise complicate successful re-entry into the community when released: adequate benefits, outstanding civil legal concerns, and inaccurate documentation of credit and criminal histories. We are a diverse team who are hard working, client centered and willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. Resp: The Benefit Advisor will assist sentenced inmates at Riker’s Island in meeting their most basic needs of self-sufficiency in addition to screen and refer for interest and eligibility in public benefits, including application completion with some post-release planning ensuring successful re-entry into the community. Fast paced and exciting position requiring very strong organizational skills, ability to market program and work collaboratively with other service providers both on and off island.
